US: Sales growth moderates at Publix in Q1
Publix Supermarkets grew revenue and same-store sales in the first quarter even as the grocery sales boom ignited by the coronavirus pandemic wanes. The grocery chain's sales for the 3 months ended March 27 were $11.7bln, a 3.9% increase from $11.2bln in 2020. Same-store sales for quarter increased 2.4%. The company estimates its sales for the quarter and the prior-year quarter increased approximately $0.9bln or 7.8% and $1bln or 10.3%, respectively, due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Excluding the impact of the coronavirus pandemic in 2021 and 2020, sales for the three months ended March 27 would have been $10.8bln, compared to $10.2bln in 2020, an increase of 5.5%.

US: Weis Markets reports first quarter results
Weis Markets, Inc. reported its sales increased 2.1% to $1.0bln during the 13-week period ended March 27, 2021, compared to the same period in 2020, while first quarter comparable store sales increased 1.4%. Aldi promises zero waste to landfill in Australia by 2025
Aldi has announced plans to send zero waste to landfill by 2025 and the move could mean additions to its popular Special Buys. Aldi has also launched a new range called Market Buy, which will feature seasonal fruits and vegetables that have minor imperfections. The range will empower farmers to sell more of their crops and avoid edible produce from going to waste, added the supermarket.

Italy: Despar sees revenue up 8.4% in 2020
Despar Italia has reported a 8.4% increase in turnover in full-year 2020, to €3.9bln, boosted by the opening of 60 stores during the period. Of the group's total revenue, more than two thirds (68%) was generated by directly-owned shops and the remaining 32% by affiliated stores. In terms of store banners, Despar accounted for 37% of overall revenue, Eurospar for 36% and Interspar for the remaining 27%.

Slovenia: Mercator Group reports revenue of €2.17bln in FY 2020
Slovenian retailer Mercator Group has reported overall revenue growth of 1.6%, to €2.17bln in its 2020 financial year, while retail revenue rose by 3.7% to €1.75bln. In Slovenia, which accounted for 58.5% of the total turnover, the annual retail revenue growth was even higher at 5.1%.

Lidl wants to build new supermarkets in UK-wide retail expansion
Lidl is looking to expand its already huge collection of stores around the UK - and the chain has confirmed it is looking for a site in the area of Mutley and Greenbank in Plymouth. Lidl said it is looking for "land and development opportunities" and is looking to speak to land and site owners, with "competitive fees paid for new site introductions".

Belarus: Eurotorg posts 8.3% net retail sales growth in first quarter
Eurotorg, Belarus' biggest retailer, has reported a 8.3% increase in net retail sales in the first quarter of its financial year, with its convenience business accounting for 52.1% of sales. The group, which spun off its e-commerce business in the first quarter as a separate entity, said that first quarter sales totalled BYN1.16bln (€370mln).
