Marisol strawberry, excellent characteristics in both traditional and soilless cultivation

The harvest of the strawberry variety Marisol is currently in full swing. Grower Francesco Polito from Calabria, Italy, expects to see good results from the variety even in June. The strawberries do best with low fertilizer doses, with an organoleptic quality characterized by an intense flavor and high dry matter.

"The hardness of the flesh and the high brix are among the main characteristics of the variety. I grow outside and am very satisfied with the harvest. Due to the weather conditions, there was not a lot of supply in the markets and therefore the prices were good. There was also a drop in prices at times, the Marisol strawberries are good quality and consumers know that," explained Francesco Polito, who cultivates Marisol in Calabria, Italy.

In Calabria, the Marisol strawberry is mostly grown near the coast. Some producers are also located at high altitude and they harvest in the middle of the summer months.

"Until April 20, we had to deal with low temperatures and rain that limited ripening. Now, fortunately, we have returned to what is normal for this period. We are very pleased with the consistency, color and flavor of what we are harvesting. Our planting is in substrate and the variety is very suitable for this growing technique."

Lucia Leuzzi from Scanzano Ionico (Basilicata, Italy) has been harvesting Fortuna54 since November, and Marisol since January. "The harvest is going on steadily and we are satisfied in all respects. Marisol has not disappointed us this year either." Leuzzi's company has invested in the early Fortuna 54 variety, with a harvest running from mid-November to March/April, and in Marisol for the Premium line, with a harvest from late January to June.

The Marisol, exclusively marketed by Viveros California, is a variety that has been present in Italy for more than 7 years and represents a good opportunity within the Italian strawberry production. The variety is grown mainly in Basilicata, but for several years it has also been grown in Calabria, Sicily, Apulia and Lazio.

"It is a crop that stands out and satisfies the whole supply chain. The prices are quite good and that allows us to face the future with optimism," concluded Leuzzi.
