Green mangoes from the Northern Territory have arrived at the Sydney Markets this week; that is quite early for the season. Vinh Nguyen, from TV Farms at the Sydney Markets, said the fruit were very early, but proving popular.
"Every year it seems to get earlier and earlier — maybe it's the weather," he said . "At the moment providores, on behalf of restaurants, have been buying these green mangoes."
He added that in coming weeks, the markets were expecting to start receiving more popular green mango varieties such as falans, nam doc mais and keow savoeys, which could initially fetch up to $200 a box.
Nguyen said the demand for green mangoes continued to grow. "People are experimenting more and more, and open to new things," he told ABC Rural. "Things like green mango salad, green mango chutney and all of the uses for them is becoming more mainstream."
The Northern Territory's main mango season usually kicks off in late August, with the bulk of the NT fruit picked during October and November, depending on weather.
