A sharp drop in the asparagus market, but organic produce remains stable

Due to the abundance of asparagus, prices on the Italian asparagus market have currently dropped. "Up until four days ago, asparagus had a price of €4.00 to €5.00 per kilo, but then this dropped sharply. On 12 May 2021, prices were fluctuating between €2.00 and €2.50 per kilo for those of lower quality and between €3.00 and €3.50 for premium quality."

"In April, prices were way too high. Asparagus was scarce and prices exceeded €6.00 per kilo. After that, prices dropped, although in basically they always remained good. That was until last week, when it collapsed."

During Easter, the market somewhat revived, but the season was abnormal due to the cold spring weather. The organic sector remained fairly stable in terms of prices. "Our crop was down about 20% due to the weather. However, the organic market has always been quite lively, and we have not experienced the fluctuations of conventional asparagus. Now the price is around €5.00 per kilo," said Renzo Moro of Primo Asparago.

The average price was in line with the company's expectations, yet a higher yield was expected. "The cold weather in March and April hampered growth and the plants went into stress," concluded Moro.
