Product and market differentiation are key strategies for post-pandemic recovery

Vietnam: Binh Thuan bolsters international growth ambitions for dragon fruit

The dragon fruit sector from Binh Thuan has been negatively impacted by the pandemic in 2020, resulting in a decrease of exports to its most important global destination markets. Due to export restrictions, many fruit products have seen their exports decline last year and were restricted to selling most of the crop either on the domestic market or to Chinese buyers, for lower prices. Expectations for this year’s exports are similar to 2020.

Binh Thuan is Vietnam’s largest dragon fruit production and trading region, located in the South of Vietnam comprises over 3,000 hectares of orchards, producing more than 600,000 tons of dragon fruit per year.

The largest producers from the Binh Thuan region with support of governmental and sector association have come up with a clear strategy for driving post-pandemic growth of the dragon fruit sector:

  • Further development of regional export markets for fresh fruits, promoting BINH THUAN dragon fruit in Asia and the Middle East, in countries such as Thailand, India, South Korean and Japan
  • Continued investments in good agricultural practices: BINH THUAN’s Geographical Indication strategy has propelled quality investments in the region, seeing a strong increase of VietGAP and GlobalGAP implementations in the region.
  • Promotion of the unique characteristics of the dragon fruit from BINH THUAN. With support Department of Science and Technology a baseline study will be conducted on the nutritional and sensorial characteristics of Binh Thuan dragon fruit, highlighting aspects related to flavour, texture, and nutritional value.
  • Developing collective branding activities including a new logo, for companies complying with the GI criteria, which will benefit the international promotion and market awareness of dragon fruit from Binh Thuan dragon fruit, supported by the Vietnamese Department of Industry and Trade. Participation in international trade shows and digital promotional events will be part of the strategy for creating more international awareness

This strategy is part of a larger GI ((geographical indication) project endorsed by Vietrade. The objective of these activities is creating a more balanced export portfolio, increase internal and external brand awareness, offer more advantages for companies that comply with the regional GI standards and decrease dependency on one single export market.
