Despite the rains, Moldovan producers ready to offer good cherry for EU market

Despite the uncommon rainy season, Moldovan producers can offer cherries of good quality to EU consumers this season.

“Kordia and Regina are the varieties that will be ready for export in a few days. Juicy, sweet, and crunchy. So, we have good expectations for this crop. I chose these varieties mostly because they are efficient, in demand on in different markets like Russian Federation and the EU markets. Our company pays special attention to the quality of the fruit, starting from the caliber, weight, firmness, but also the color of the cherries. A special role is played by the storage period, transporting the product to the final consumer, so that the cherries reach their ideal state. We can deliver the cherries in cardboard or wooden crates at the buyer's request”, told Igor Lesnic, owner of Viva-Igna LTD, member of Fruit Producers and Exporters Association of Moldova.

The company is GLOBALG.A.P. certified and can offer more than 100 tons of cherries this year. Take a virtual tour in the company cherry orchard here

"We expect to find new clients in Europe this year not only for cherries but also for apricots, plums and apples. Moldovan producers are able to offer fruits adapted to market requirements that are constantly changing”, said Iurie Fala, executive director of Fruit Producers and Exporters Association of Moldova.

The cherry production is a fast-developing sector in the Republic of Moldova. Every year new varieties are planted, new production and post-harvest technologies are implemented to ensure the quality and tastiest fruit.

Moldova Sweet and Sour Cherry production estimates a volume of 20,000 tons per annum. The country is already among the Top 20 sweet cherry exporters.
