Murcian table grapes ready to be shipped to Africa

The table grape campaign has already started in the Region of Murcia, which has already started shipping the first batches to the many markets that demand them, including African ones.

"All the fruit and vegetables in our range are marketed in Europe, except for one line that we export to the Caribbean, but the grape campaign is mainly focused on Africa," says Borja Herrera, manager of the Murcia-based company Difrusol. "We mainly export grapes to Senegal, Cameroon and Guinea-Conakry, where there is a demand for red and black varieties, both seeded and seedless."

"We will start shipping to Africa in the second half of July, when the varieties demanded by these destinations become available. At the moment, there are still table grapes from Egypt and Morocco available and we cannot compete with them, either in terms of price or proximity," he says.

This company, based in Ceutí, has been marketing Murcian grapes in West African markets for 4 years, obtaining interesting results. "In the end, Africa is a destination with limitations when it comes to prices and we don't know what levels we are going to reach this season. It is difficult to make predictions about it; however, we do expect to at least match the volumes exported last season," says Borja Herrera.

In addition to table grapes, Difrusol offers a wide range of products grown in Murcia and Almeria. In 2020, it reached a turnover of 5 million Euro. "We are fundamentally marketers. The fruits and vegetables we sell can be offered under the brand of the producers, or under our own Difrusol brand, depending on the requirements of the suppliers, the customers' needs or the destinations we work with," he says.

"Right now, in addition to starting with the grape campaign, we are working with watermelons, melons, stone fruit and bell peppers and, for the first time, we have included corn in our range this year," says Borja. "It is a product that we had never worked with before, but it has been very well received in our first marketing experience. We are exporting it to various destinations, including Scandinavia, the UK, the Czech Republic and Italy."
