In 2020 Mexico achieved its highest historical participation in the total global exports of peppers with 23.9%, consolidating itself as a leader in the world market of this vegetable. Last year Mexico's pepper exports totaled 1.453 billion dollars, i.e. 9% more than in the previous year.
In 2018, its exports grew by 17% and in 2019 they rose by 11%, increasing Mexico's leadership in this world ranking. In fact, in 2018 Mexico displaced the Netherlands from the second global position, and the following year it surpassed Spain, becoming the world leader.
According to data from the World Trade Organization (WTO), in 2020, Spain –the second-largest global exporter of peppers behind Mexico– had a world share of 22.8%; It was followed by the Netherlands with 18.8%, Canada with 8.3%, and the United States with 4.4%.
Mexico exports virtually all its peppers to the United States, the world's largest importer of this vegetable.
After avocado and tomato, pepper is the most important fruit and vegetable product in the country's agro-export basket.
