Odepa's analysis of Chile's fruit exports in the first half of 2021

Chile exported 1.68 million tons of fresh fruit

Between January and June 2021, Chile exported 2.04 million tons of fruits for $ 4.441 billion dollars FOB – without considering the Value Variation Report –, i.e. 1% less volume and 4% more value than in the same period of the previous year.

According to the latest bulletin of the Office of Agricultural Studies and Policies (Odepa) corresponding to the period between January and June of this year, 81% of this total value corresponds to fresh fruit, 15% to processed fruit (juices, oils, canned, frozen, dehydrated), and 4% to nuts (walnuts, almonds, and hazelnuts, among others).

The country exported 1.68 million tons of fresh fruit (-2%) for 3.576 billion dollars FOB (+3%) during that period. The main fresh fruit species exported in this period was the cherry, with 266,000 tons (+ 83%), equivalent to 1,350 million FOB dollars (+ 41%), mostly destined for China (which concentrates 91% of the total value of cherry shipments).

It was followed by table grapes with 520,000 tons (-13%) and 847.5 million FOB dollars (-17%), with shipments mainly to the USA (46%) and China (16%).

Blueberries ranked third with 95,938 tons (+ 14%) and 481.15 million FOB dollars (+ 14%). The main destinations were the US (49%), the Netherlands (19%), and the United Kingdom (10%).

These three species accounted for 75% of the total value of fresh fruit exports in the aforementioned period.

Between January and June 2021, the country exported a total of 47,500 tons (+ 8%) of nuts for 196.2 million dollars FOB (+ 5%). The main exported product in terms of value was the walnut in shell, with 29,940 tons and 80.47 million FOB dollars, accounting for 41% of the total value of dried fruit shipments. Its main destinations were Turkey, India, Italy, and the United Arab Emirates (30%, 15%, 13%, and 10% respectively).

Finally, the country exported 311,000 tons (+ 3%) of processed fruits for 669 million dollars FOB (+ 9%) between January and June 2021.

Processed fruit exports were led, in value, by frozen fruits (45%), followed by juices (18%), dehydrated (17.5%), canned ( 17.2%), and oils (3%). Juice exports increased by 67% over the same period of the previous year, while frozen fruit and oil exports increased by 19% and 9%, respectively.
