Avocados, known as 'super fruits', have become more and more popular among Chinese consumers in recent years. Market demand grows stronger every year, and an increasing number of countries have obtained permission to export avocados to China.
Mr. Avocado is a specialized avocado supplier. This company places emphasis on modernization and science-based post-harvest processing methods to create a firm foundation for the rapidly expanding avocado market in China. This is the peak period for Mr. Avocado and Ms. Liu Mosu, spokesperson for specialized avocado importer Mr. Avocado, recently talked about current conditions in the Chinese avocado market.
Avocados are rich in nutrients. They are known in China as a 'super fruit' and can be eaten fresh, but food and beverage industries have also developed a wide range of other avocado-based products. For example, they can be used in salads, but there are also avocado cakes and avocado drinks. A growing number of Chinese consumers have become aware of and love the avocado.
Improving people's recognition of ready-to-eat avocados
According to Ms. Liu Mosu, CEO of Mr. Avocado: "The domestic industry fails to produce avocados on a commercial scale because there are problems with the avocado seedlings and the level of plantation technology. Yunnan is the most suitable region in China for the cultivation of avos and growers in Yunnan are gradually raising the level of plantation technology as they improve the localization of avocado varieties, so Chinese consumers will hopefully be able to buy ready-to-eat avocados from Yunnan in the near future.
"Mr. Avocado has established a modern, standardized avocado plantation in Yunnan with an annual production volume of 300,000 avocado seedlings. This plantation provides a scientific basis for local avocado plantation in Yunnan! Although avocado growers around the world keep an eye on Yunnan, Chinese consumers are still very unaware of home-grown ready-to-eat avocados. Mr. Avocado is one of the leading companies in the Chinese avocado market, and that is why we take this opportunity to simultaneously develop plantations in Yunnan and raise awareness among Chinese consumers of the Mr. Avocado ready-to-eat avocados."
Our own ripening centers guarantee the highest product quality
Avocadoes are now well-known in the Chinese market after years of rapid development. Market demand grows stronger every year, but the industry continues to struggle with a problematic consumer experience.
"We often hear from consumer feedback that the unripe avocados are still too hard, even after they are left out for a few days, or they are too ripe, have begun to rot, and show black spots. We discovered that this problem stems for an interruption in the cold supply chain. Wholesale markets often do not have the right facilities, and the avocados are in the open air for an entire day. Shop owners often have little knowledge about proper ways to store avocadoes. They keep them on the shelves at room temperature. That is why avocadoes often rot soon after they are purchased. The key to solving this critical issue in the avocado industry is to improve the level of post-harvest processing technology," said Ms. Liu.
"We have constructed our own automated ripening center in Kunshan to address this problem in the avocado supply chain. The center is equipped with specialized avocado ripening technology imported from North America. Imported avocados are kept in this center and pass through the ripening process to make sure that when they are sold the avocadoes are ready to eat. In this way consumers do not have to wait for days, but they can eat them as soon as they get home. The ready-to-eat avos are all in an ideal stage of ripeness with soft, glutinous fruit flesh that provides a smooth flavor. That is how we improve the quality of consumer experience."
Importing top-quality avocados from production areas across the globe to guarantee steady, year-round supply for the Chinese market
"A few years ago imported avocados were only for sale in first-tier cities, but now demand in second- and third-tier cities is growing fast. Take our own company as an example, last year our sales volume increased by nearly 65%. And the sales volume in the first half of this year doubled in comparison with the same period last year," said Ms. Liu.
"The Chinese market has huge potential, and so production areas around the world seek to obtain permission for avocado export to China. Mr. Avocado supports the import of avocados from around the world, but also works hard to maintain the highest quality standards."
At the moment, Mr. Avocado primarily imports avocados from Mexico, Peru, and Chile. The company also explores other avocado production areas and has received the first shipping containers with avocados from Colombia and California.
"We hope to import from even more production areas to provide Chinese consumers with a rich consumer experience, while at the same time guaranteeing steady, year-round supply of top-quality avocados for the Chinese market."
Mr. Avocado participates in the Shanghai International Fruit Expo that takes place between the 12th and 14th of August. The company stand can be found in hall E4 at booth E1-3. When asked about her expectations of this expo, Ms. Liu replied: "We hope to use this platform to connect with even more suppliers and promote the concept of ready-to-eat avocados in the domestic market."
