Australian exporter SSM Enterprises is an Australian exporter based in Sydney sourcing fruit from all across Australia. The main products are cherries, exotic fruit and citrus and the main export market is India.
The company sources fruit from growers and have built key relationships with them as the Indian market is price sensitive.
SSM has been established since 2016 and although the main market for citrus is India, they are also developing new markets globally for other fruits.
“We operate citrus exports between mid-June to mid-October. It has been a challenging year with the Indian citrus market saturated with Egyptian citrus and exports have begun from South Africa too. Various parts of India were in lockdown and have gradually started to open up and there has been an increase in sea freight costs and challenges with shipping times delayed due to shortage of refrigerated containers.”
The quality of Australian citrus and quality assurances process and the longer shelf life is a massive attribute for the company.

“The market started to pick up from the end of July and we’re moving into late navels at the moment. The Australian citrus quality has been really good this year however the prices have gone up due to severe lack of labour and the fluctuating exchange rate. There is a strong demand in the domestic market at the moment too. Usually from June, this is a period where we get quite a strong demand from our Indian customers however this year they imported volumes from Egypt in March as the fruit was considerably cheaper, hence the market has been saturated with Egyptian citrus. The shift and demand has changed in the last few weeks and it is now moving towards the Australian citrus imports.”
