Michel van den Berg, De Best AGF, the Netherlands

"Unusually large melon supply with low prices, stone fruit market's the exact opposite"

Each year is different when it comes to fruit trading. So says fruit trader Michel van den Berg of De Best AGF in the Netherlands. "Last year we had unprecedented sales. Everyone was vacationing at home. This year, everyone's going away, and it's a lot quieter. Of course, the weather isn't helping either. Consistent summer weather means many tourists in the Netherlands to serve. The current weather determines sales. It always does."

"The Spanish melon supply's been huge in recent weeks. The warm weather is making the melons proliferate. That, while consumption here's been lacking. That's due to the shortage of sunny weather. So, prices are incredibly low across the board. From Galia to Cantaloupe, Piel-de-Sapo, and yellow melons. The market situation hasn't been this dramatic in years."

It's the opposite for stone fruit. "There are hardly any nectarines or peaches. The supply's meager across the board. And prices are, therefore, excellent. Nectarines are selling for €8 to €10. That's a price level we haven't experienced in years. There are also few strawberries available. Supermarkets can hardly meet their schedules. And very little remains for free trade. That's resulting in prices of around €5/kg," Michel concludes.
