Marcel van Rooijen, Trofi, the Netherlands:

"Keitt sales a bright spot on the mango market"

The mango seasons in the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, and Puerto Rico are nearing their end. "The fruit's just good enough, and free-market sales are stagnating. So, prices have gone into free fall," says Marcel van Rooijen of Trofi in the Netherlands.

In the last three weeks, Senegal, too, has been supplying inferior fruit. That is according to this importer. "That's led to many quality issues. There's no demand on the free market either. The last arrivals are this week. Then it'll be over and done with."

The market has not been good for Brazilian mangoes either. "There's been an abundant supply of Palmers to Spain," Marcel says. "Sales in Northern Europe are, therefore, at a standstill. Conversely, traditional Tommy Atkins sales towards Eastern Europe are stagnating. There, too, there's little joy and few inquiries. It's down to getting what you can for them."

Keitt mangoes bring good news, though. "This market was also depressed until two weeks ago. But it's now recovering nicely. Supermarkets are opting for Keitts. That's thanks to its flavor and improved shelf life. We can give our customers a good product in the coming weeks, without any significant problems," Marcel concludes.
