The Spanish pomegranate harvest started this week with the first reddish-skinned varieties, mainly the early Acco and Smith. These will be followed in the coming weeks by other varieties, such as the Wonderful, Valenciana and the Mollar, in October.
"The harvest is starting a little earlier than usual and yields are higher than last year, so there should be a slightly greater production this season," says Juan Antonio Pons, manager of the Valencian company Pons Redondo Group.
"The demand is high at the moment and prices are good, as the markets are relatively empty, since the productions in Spain and other places in the Mediterranean Arc are only just starting," he says. "However, as the weeks go by and the supply increases, prices should fall," says Juan Antonio Pons.
According to the producer and exporter, the first Spanish Acco pomegranates, the most sought-after extra early variety, are priced at around 2.00 € per kilo in the German market. Although there are still Indian pomegranates in the European markets, these cannot compete against the Spanish production, since they are more expensive due to the high logistic costs, with an average price of between 2.80 to 3.00 € per kilo.
Pons Redondo markets its pomegranates mainly in the German, French, Dutch and Swiss markets.
