Peruvian avocados occupy an important position in the international avocado market because their production volume is stable and their product quality is excellent. The Peruvian Avocado Association (ProHass) recently announced their latest statistics. In 2021, Peru exported a total of 473,000 tons of avocados, which is 29.2% more than the 366,000 tons of avocados Peru exported in 2020. The overall surface area devoted to avocado plantation in Peru expanded and so did the overall production area. This further secured the position of the Peruvian avocado as an excellent export fruit. The main export markets for Peruvian avocados are still in Europe and the USA.
Peruvian avocado export expands, Chinese avocado import grows fastest
Data also shows that China is the fastest-growing importer of Peruvian avocados. China imported 27,500 tons of avocados in 2020, and 15,700 tons came from Peru, which makes Peru the largest avocado supplier in the Chinese market.
The rise of avocado consumption is still relatively recent in China. The avocado looks lovely, the color is a fresh green, and the avocado has a lot of uses. That is why the avocado quickly became very popular with younger consumers. Furthermore, the avocado has 'high heat, low sugar', which makes the avocado a healthy option.
Another reason for the rapid growth of avocado retail in China is the free trade agreement between China and Peru in April, 2019. In Latin America a total of 19 countries joined in the Chinese 'one road, one belt initiative'. This initiative promotes international trade and stimulates growth in the Peruvian avocado industry.
Although the Chinese import volume of Peruvian avocados is not that large yet, Peruvian avocado suppliers are very aware of the huge potential in China. In order to further open up and develop the Chinese market for avocados, ProHass works hard to improve the production standards in the Peruvian avocado industry and meet the requirements of the Chinese market.
ProHass members account for more than 80% of the overall surface area devoted to avocado plantation in Peru. ProHass represents small, medium, and large-scale companies. Together they can guarantee a stable, year-round supply of high-quality avocados for the Chinese market. At the same time, the association also provides support for production technology problems and research and development in the industry. This helps to improve avocado production, packaging, and commercialization of the industry.
According to a spokesperson of ProHass, the association hopes to work together with even more suppliers and distribution platforms and put even more high-quality Peruvian avocados in the hands of Chinese consumers. ProHass promotes the growth of Peruvian avocado export to the Chinese market.
