Australia’s Calypso mango season got off to an early start this season in the Northern Territory, with the first harvest on 6th September.
This season is expected to run for about 22 weeks from early September in the Northern Territory (NT) to around the 1st or 2nd week in December before moving East to Far North Queensland (FNQ) around the Atherton Tablelands and then further south to Bundaberg and will finish around the end of January. The whole season will run around 2-3 weeks longer than last year.
“Our main regions of the NT and FNQ have experienced ideal weather conditions. Good seasonal rainfall in the northern regions of Australia have ensured the trees are in good health and primed to produce good quality fruit,” said Michael Simonetta CEO at Perfection Fresh.
“Compared to last year volumes for the Calypso variety are looking good. Some other varieties grown in Australia are seeing a more mixed forecast. Fruit quality is looking good this season with a range of fruit sizes and good quality resulting in a great eating experience for our consumers both in Australia and in our export markets.”
Calypso® is the brand name for the B74 mango variety, a hybrid of the Sensation, a highly coloured and very productive Florida variety and the Kensington Pride, a popular Australian variety renowned for its intense flavour.
“Calypso was first introduced in 1999, the first new mango variety in over 30 years, and it really delivered new news and choice for growers, retailers and consumers in the Australian market. The variety spent 20 years in development to essentially give the best of both varieties.”
The Calypso mango has an extra small seed, which means there is more mango flesh to eat and greater value for money. It has smooth, succulent flesh with no stringy fibres. The firmer flesh makes it great for cooking, so it’s a really versatile mango.
“Perfection Fresh owns the licensing and marketing rights globally for Calypso mangoes and manages the growing and propagation process to ensure that all Calypso mangoes meet our criteria for the ‘Perfect Mango'.”
“We are actively looking to expand our grower networks in international markets with plans in Peru, Mexico and China. Perfection Fresh is open to grower expansion in other markets for example South Africa, Spain and Italy.
“Currently Australia is our largest market. Strategically we seek to grow some key export markets such as New Zealand and UAE as well as China, South Korea, US, Hong Kong, Singapore, Canada. This complements the other products across our portfolio that are in demand in key export markets.”
