This calendar year, Sakata Seed America commercialized its seedless New Horizon watermelon collection. Both from a grower and consumer perspective, the varieties in this series offer distinct differences and specialized improvements from previous breeding genetics. At last month’s Woodland field trials, the varieties were catching the eyes of many interested seed distributors and growers alike.
“In addition to an excellent flavor, the new varieties look attractive from a consumer point of view,” says Nihat Guner, Watermelon Breeder with Sakata Seed America. “They offer a darker, vibrant rind pattern with a deep red flesh color,” he says. In addition, the firm flesh offers good potential for the fresh-cut market.

More grower friendly
Guner shared that the New Horizon watermelons are more grower-friendly compared to varieties previously developed. They offer relief when it comes to pressing issues such as changing weather conditions and water shortage. “Due to their vigorous vine structure, all varieties in the New Horizon collection have a very strong root system, which makes them perform well in areas with low water supplies.” They offer wide adaptability and are grown in different areas across the globe, including the US east coast, west coast, Mexico, Guatemala, Brazil, and Australia. In addition, the varieties offer excellent yield potential.
Another benefit of a vigorous plant structure is protection against sunburn. The vigorous vines cover the fruit and protect it from sunburn. “Additionally, dark rinds keep the fruit protected internally.”
So far, the New Horizon collection includes three varieties that are available commercially – with more on the way.
- Sierra Madre: 18 to 22 lbs.; Extended shipping and field holding ability, excellent yield potential and fresh-cut market potential.
Sierra Madre.
- El Capitan: 16 to 20 lbs.; Very firm flesh with good potential for the fresh-cut market.
El Capitan.
- Sierra Nevada: 17 to 21 lbs.; Attractive, darker Crimson Sweet rind pattern, uniform, blocky fruit and vigorous vines.
Sierra Nevada.
Sakata is committed to expanding on the series. While not available commercially yet, variety 9161 is close to hitting the market.
