Pears - quick solutions needed to rescue the chain

In addition to the many traditional products, the complete national pear and apple range and red and black plums, Julius (Ceccarelli Giulio) is introducing novelties for the fall season. These include new FSC cardboard packaging for golden kiwifruits, available exclusively from a leading German chain.

"As for golden kiwifruit, we are talking about Soreli, which we first presented at Fruit Logistica in 2010. In the fall of the same year, we started commercializing them under the Julisgold registered trademark. Of course we do not just have trays, we also have reusable solutions (EPS, IFCO...) with cardboard cells."

Regarding the summer campaign, Ceccarelli reports that: "As I hoped in early July, apricots improved with high production prices. Then, as usual, demand dropped in September. Sales of peaches and nectarines have been satisfactory so far thanks to the lower quantities from northern Spain."

The pear situation is more complex. "It seems like an 'evil fog' has swept the 'pear district', as I always refer to the leading pear production area in Emilia Romagna when discussing it with German retailers. This 'fog' is preventing us from producing pears."

"I have just got back from a business trip to Belgium and Germany to assess new pear varieties. They have a satisfactory production where the brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys) does not seem to be such a huge problem. There were plenty of pears available in Edeka, Netto, Penny and Aldi stores, however they were of the Williams of Bodense, Xenia, Cheeky and Conference varieties."

"As I've said multiple times, extraordinary measures are needed to give hope to pear producers, who are already uprooting the 'queen' of pears, i.e. Abate. Quick and concrete answers are needed to increase their profits."

"The economic aid granted for the damage caused by the stink bug and, we hope, by the frost, is a good thing, but we need research to get out of this 'fog', of this stalemate: we lack the weapons and concrete strategies to deal with the stink bug and Alternaria, otherwise the entire Italian pear chain risks disappearing."
