Arancia Rossa di Sicilia Igp has gained one additional tool to protect the oranges from frauds and counterfeits as it registered with the International Trademark Register.
Elena Albertini
"We have decided to register the international trademark because those who, like us, exports high-quality Italian products, often have to deal with counterfeited products or unfair competition due to Italian-sounding products from extra-European countries that do not respect designations of origin or geographic indications," explains Elena Albertini, vice-president of Consorzio di Tutela Arancia Rossa di Sicilia Igp.
"The foreign markets are an undeniable opportunity for excellent Italian products, of which the exports towards both Europe and extra-European countries have been growing for over a decade. Italian producers and consortia therefore need to adopt tools and strategies to defend themselves against counterfeited and misleading products which can affect the turnover of original products or damage their image. By registering the Arancia Rossa di Sicilia trademark, the precious Sicilian fruits will be now protected also in Canada, Japan, Norway, UK, USA and Russian Federation."
"Thanks to the hard work of our supervisory structure, we have set up a strategy to protect our oranges both in Italy and abroad. On a domestic and community level, there are the PGI mark and traceability and blockchain tools. Now, by registering the brand on an international level, we have taken one further step to safeguard blood oranges, which are more and more appreciated on the extra-European markets as well."
