Turkish ports: Increased exports make for heavier workload

The ports of Turkey are faced with a major increase in workload as foreign sales continue to soar. After the detrimental effects of Covid-19 in spring last year, Turkey’s exports surged 34% year-on-year to over $203 billion from January through November of this year. This, in effect, marks an all-time eleven-month high. The Turkish Exporters Assembly reported that imports rose to $243.3 billion.

Major Turkish ports are now doing their utmost to handle the high capacity, attempting to boost investments to navigate the challenging global trade environment. Among these is the international port in southern Mersin province, which stands out as one of the most important transfer locations for exported products.

The 92nd largest container terminal in the world and one of the largest ports in Turkey, Mersin International Port (MIP) has a nearly 2.6-million-container capacity.  Compared to a more than 766,000 TEU export volume in 2020, the port’s export volume has reached almost 764,000 TEU during the first 11 months of this year.
