Julien Cremer, Indiana Import:

Our chocolate oranges from Spain are more and more popular”

There is an usual orange among the fruit and vegetables on the MIN market of Perpignan. The chocolate orange has a brown color, as its name indicates, and it does not go unnoticed. “It is an orange of the Navel variety from Spain. It was discovered somewhat by chance about 10 years ago by a producer in the region of Valencia. This producer then developed a hybrid which he has been cultivating and selling. He used to be the only one producing this variety and now they are three,” explains Julien Cremer, sales director of Indiana Import.

This year, the market has really opened up to this product. “It is a very appealing orange. We have been offering it for 7 years and the demand keeps increasing. Its taste is slightly different from that of a classic table orange in the sense that it is sweeter, less acidic. Its originality and rarity naturally mean that it is more expensive. A classic orange sells at about 1.30 euros/kg [1.47 USD/kg], and the chocolate orange at nearly 2.80 euros/kg [3.16 USD/kg].”

The season started about two weeks ago and will last two to three months. During this whole period, Indiana Import will offer the chocolate orange under the brands Côté Nature and Open Agro. In January, another unusual product, the red skinned lemon from Spain, will also join the offer from Indiana Import.
