Mainland China has announced an import prohibition on Taiwanese pineapples, wax apples, and pineapple sugar apples. These three kinds of fruit are the largest in terms of export volume to mainland China. Moreover, additional measures in sea ports, such as quarantines for sailors and downtime for customs personnel, have further reduced the number of cargo ships between Taiwan and mainland China, which means that only a small volume of Taiwanese fruit arrived in Chinese ports.
Fruit Paradise Trading Co., Ltd. is a Taiwanese fruit grower and exporter. The company has an export office in Taiwan that guarantees product quality, and an import office in Shanghai, which is responsible for local distribution. Company spokesperson, Rock, recently talked about current conditions in the Chinese market for Taiwanese fruit. "Taiwanese fruit export to mainland China is difficult at the moment, but Taiwan is working hard to expand fruit export to Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia."
"Taiwan enjoys a price advantage in fruit export to northeast Asia, especially for fruits that are no longer welcome in mainland China. The export price is relatively low, so market demand grows," explained Rock. "And in the Southeast Asian market Taiwan enjoys a quality advantage. Taiwanese exporters who aim at the Southeast Asian market focus on premium agricultural products. They only select fruit products that stand out in terms of product quality, flavor, and appearance. Market demand from that region increased quite a lot during the period leading up to Christmas when customers purchased premium fruits as gifts for family, friends, and other relations."
When asked about the impact of the pandemic on the business of Fruit Paradise Trading, Rock replied, "the pandemic has had an immense impact on several Southeast Asian countries, both in the severity of import restrictions and the decline of consumer power."
"In addition to the pandemic, the shipping fees between Taiwan and Southeast Asia also increased. Moreover, there were still exporters who received orders but simply could not obtain cargo space, which means they could not ship their fruit products before the holiday sales season. We worked hard to draw up our retail strategy on time and book cargo space well in advance."
Mainland China is still the main export market for Fruit Paradise Trading. "Our export volume declined by 80% last year when mainland China prohibited the import of pineapples, wax apples, and pineapple sugar apples," said Rock. "We diverted our attention and grew our share of the markets in Indonesia and the Philippines. And we are in conversation with importers in other Asian markets."
