Sri Lankan farmers unhappy with potato & onion import tax reduction

Sri Lanka’s All Island Economic Centre Collective (AIECC) expressed displeasure over the decision taken by the government to reduce the import tax on big onions and potatoes by 30 per cent.

According to AIECC President Aruna Shantha Hettiarachchi, local big onions and potatoes have reached the Pettah main market, Peliyagoda Manning vegetable market and also the Dambulla main vegetable market in numbers.  Hettiarachchi said he was saddened to note that at a time when a large quantity of locally reaped potato and big onion harvest have reached markets all over the country, the decision taken by the government to grant a 30 per cent tax relief on imported potatoes and big onions now.

He said this situation has affected a large number of farmers in Nuwara Eliya, Welimada, Dambulla, Puttalam, Galewela, Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa and Medirigiriya.
