Interfel: big drop in the consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables

A drop in the consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables, organic sales in decline…during its conference at the beginning of the year, Interfel presented the changes in consumption trends.

Decline of homemade products
The repeated lockdowns had pushed consumers to cook more, which had led to an increased consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables. However, French consumers now tend to eat more ready-made food. The sales of these products increased by 5% in 2021, with a sudden stop in consumption since the fall of 2021, according to Laurent Grandin, president of the interprofession.

Drop in organic sales
Interfel also notes a drop of 10% in the consumption of organic fruit and vegetables between October 2020 and 2021. A “considerable” decline, according to the president, especially in view of the “constant” evolution of the past 20 years.

The economic considerations due to the general increase in costs and a reinforcement of the growing trends to consume “locally” and “without pesticides” have caused a drop in organic sales.

In order to counteract this downward trend, communication actions will be launched by Interfel and Agence Bio during the month of February.
