Between January and November 2021, Ecuadorian pineapple exports reached $46 million, according to the records of the Ecuadorian Federation of Exporters (Fedexpor), i.e. 22% more than in the same period of 2020.
These figures position Ecuador as the leading pineapple exporting country in South America and as the eighth supplier worldwide, stated the Ministry of Production, Foreign Trade, Investments, and Fisheries.
The country's export volume also increased, as Ecuador went from exporting 75,573 tons of pineapple of the Golden Sweet variety in 2020 to 90,186 tons up until November of last year.
Main destinations
The European Union bloc is the main commercial destination for Ecuadorian pineapple, and the Netherlands and Germany are the EU's two main buyers.
Chile is the country that buys the most Ecuadorian fruit with an average annual demand worth more than $12 million. In 2021 alone, it demanded $15 million. Ecuador also sells its pineapples to the United States and Argentina.
Chile and the Netherlands accounted for 65% of Ecuadorian shipments, with $29 million exported between January and November 2021. In 2021, the Netherlands acquired almost three times more pineapple than in 2020 and in previous years.
New Zealand, Uruguay, and Russia also purchase Ecuadorian pineapples, although their participation is minimal.
