AU: New commodities added as protocol markets for export to New Zealand

This Industry Advice Notice (IAN) is to notify industry that new commodities have been added to the New Zealand Export Plan and that New Zealand is now considered a protocol market for these commodities.

Summary of changes and key points
The following commodities have been added to the New Zealand Export Plan to include mitigation measures for Liriomyza huidobrensis and Liriomyza trifolii:

  • Basil (Ocimum basilicum)
  • Broccoflower (Brassica oleracea)
  • Broccoli (Brassica oleracea)
  • Brussel sprouts (Brassica oleracea)
  • Cabbage (Brassica oleracea)
  • Cauliflower (Brassica oleracea)
  • Celery (Apium graveolens)
  • Lettuce (Lactuca sativa)
  • Parsley (Petroselinum spp.)

New Zealand is now considered a protocol market for these commodities and require inspecting authorised officers (AOs) to have the job function HEP4001:9 Export inspection of horticulture protocol – leafy and other mixed vegetables to conduct inspections.
All export certification fees and charges applicable to these commodities will be applied as per the department’s charging guidelines.

Background
Following the detection of Serpentine leafminer (Liriomyza huidobrensis) and American serpentine leafminer (Liriomyza trifolii) in Australia, the above commodities were identified as potential hosts of these Liriomyza species and were added to the New Zealand Export Plan.

New requirements to manage these Liriomyza species came into effect on 11 October 2021 as outlined in IAN 2021-50.

The New Zealand Export Plan is available in the ‘Documents’ section of the Manual of Importing Country Requirements (Micor). To access these documents, you must be a registered Micor plant user.
