In 2021, China's fruit import volume and import value both hit new highs

Recently, the Fruit Branch of the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Foodstuffs, Native Animals and Animals, released a report on China's fruit import and export trade in 2021. The report shows that in 2021, China's fruit imports reached a new high, with an import value of US$13.47 billion (about 85.588 billion RMB), a year-on-year increase of 30.9%; the import volume reached 7.027 million tons, an increase of 11.5% year-on-year.

In terms of categories, the top eight fresh fruits in terms of import value are durian, cherries, bananas, mangosteen (including dried mangosteen), longan, kiwi, grapes and pitaya fruit.

In 2021, durian was China’s largest import category, with an import value of 4.21 billion US dollars (about 26.75 billion RMB), and an import volume of 822,000 tons, an increase of 82.4% and 42.7% year-on-year. The largest supplier is Thailand. The import value of cherries this year was 1.98 billion US dollars (about 12.581 billion RMB), and the import volume was 314,000 tons, an increase of 20.0% and 48.9% respectively.

Among them, 300,000 tons were imported from Chile, a year-on-year increase of 54%. In 2021, the import value of bananas is 1.04 billion US dollars (about 6.608 billion RMB), and the import volume is 1.864 million tons, an increase of 11.2% and 6.7% year-on-year. Major suppliers include the Philippines, Cambodia, Vietnam, Ecuador, etc. In order of import value, the top eight fruit suppliers to China are Thailand, Chile, Vietnam, the Philippines, New Zealand, Peru, Australia and South Africa.

In terms of exports, affected by the pandemic, both export value and export volume have declined. The export value was 5.43 billion US dollars (about 34.502 billion RMB), a year-on-year decrease of 14.9%; the export volume was 3.546 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 8.3%.
