Study: Instacart fueling online grocery market
Supermarket chains like Kroger, Publix and Aldi lifted their online sales last year through Instacart, which remains the main growth driver in the e-grocery delivery market, according to retail and consumer goods analytics firm 1010data. In 2021, conventional grocers all raised their sales share as sellers via Instacart’s platform, including gains of 2% for Aldi and 1% apiece for Kroger and Publix, New York-based 1010data said in its “Online Grocery Mini-Report”. Warehouse club chains Costco Wholesale and BJ’s Wholesale Club, however, lost share on Instacart’s platform, 1010data noted.

Sachem Head seeks control of US Foods board, nominates 7 directors
Investment firm Sachem Head Capital Management is trying to take control of US Foods Holding Corp's board and has nominated 7 directors, arguing that the food distributor's performance has been lagging its peers. Sachem Head, which owns 8.7% of the company, called the nominations "the last option available" to protect stockholder interests after US Foods failed to make operational improvements and lift margins. In response, US Foods said it profitably grew market share and expanded core earnings margins in the 4 years leading up to the pandemic and has since invested roughly $60mln to hire more people.

Brazil: Carrefour reports a 13.5% drop in Q4 adjusted net income
Carrefour Brasil reported that 4th-quarter net income fell from a year earlier but beat estimates, helped by sales increases. The local unit of French retailer Carrefour SA posted an adjusted net income of 766mln reais ($148.48mln), down 13.5% from a year earlier but above a Refinitiv Eikon analysts' estimate of 738.2mln reais.

Online grocer Rohlik expands in Germany, targets 1.2bln euro sales in 2024
Online grocery delivery business Rohlik Group said it has expanded its German business to the Rhine-Main region including Frankfurt and plans to add Hamburg, Cologne and other cities within 2 years to become the German market leader. "Aiming for a turnover of 1.2bln euros in 2024, (Rohlik's German brand) Knuspr.de is aiming to be number 1 in the growing e-grocery market in Germany with 30% market share", the company said in a statement.

Ahold Delhaize sees Europe Q4 sales dip, notes 'continued market share gains'
Dutch retailer Ahold Delhaize has reported a 1.5% decrease in sales its European operations in the 4th quarter of its financial year (-1.9% at constant exchange rates), with its Albert Heijn banner a 'particular standout' in the quarter, the company said. If the 53rd week in 2020 is excluded, Q4 net sales rose 3.0% at constant exchange rates, Ahold Delhaize said. For the full year, group net sales of €75.6bln were up 3.3% on 2020 at constant exchange rates, and up 5.0% on a comparable 52-week basis.
