The rains in Brazil could improve Argentine onion sales

In the last campaign, a significant volume of Argentine onions wasn't marketed because onion prices were too low. This year, projections are better due to the impact that the rains would have on Brazilian production.

"We expect a good year. The price at the moment stands at 25 pesos per kilo in the fields. We'll save the product for August and have a hit because people are doing things better. We hope it's a good year, there is a lot of economic movement in the face of the Brazilian catastrophe," stated Fernando Irastorza, a renowned producer.

Unfortunately, he said the Val 14 variety does not comply with the export parameters because of the heat in January. However, he added, they hope to achieve better quality, later on, to send it to the Brazilian market. It will have firm prices, and good value, he said.

This campaign in the Lower Valley is marked by the increase in the area of onion production, which would be mainly due to the low quality and scarcity of water in the Buenos Aires valley of the Colorado River. According to data from the Lower Valley Development Institute (IDEVI), while the 2020-2021 season closed at 2,200 hectares, this campaign has an area of more than 3,300 hectares.
