Campos Borquez, a supplier of year-round organic and regenerative super-foods, has become the first farm in Mexico to obtain the Regenerative Organic Certification (ROC), a milestone for the company.
Campos Borquez is the first farm in Mexico to obtain the Regenerative Organic Certification (ROC).
“My family was part of a group of pioneers in a valley that hosted Dr. Norman Borlaug’s research for the Green Revolution; maximizing yield to have enough food supply for a rapidly growing population was at the core of sustainable farming for my parent’s generation,” says Pablo Borquez, Campos Borquez’s CEO. “Times have changed and our part in sustainable farming’s history is being defined by the Regenerative Organic Alliance’s vision and guidelines. We feel proud to have obtained the certification and be part of this movement.”
The implementation of regenerative practices involves three main pillars: Soil's Health, Animal Welfare and Social Fairness.
The implementation of regenerative practices involves three main pillars: Soil's Health, Animal Welfare and Social Fairness. The certification has three levels, Bronze, Silver and Gold, and requires members to improve with them through the years to maintain the certification. “With ROC, we seek to continue building into our purpose towards sustainability, but now with a greater focus in taking the company’s organic practices to one that is more proactive in how much life and organic matter there is in our soil as well as sequestering the atmospheric carbon back into the ground,” says Sergio Borquez, Pablo’s son and the company’s EVP.
This is a big step in the way agriculture is being made in Mexico and this achievement reaffirms Campos Borquez's commitment of a being a responsible agriculture company.
Campos Borquez has a foundation that built and operates four community centers with development programs reaching more than 70,000 yearly users.
“While we have always strived to nurture the ecosystems and communities we work on, this certification helps us propel our mission to another level. It provides an instrument for like-minded organizations and consumers to connect commercially while serving as a guideline to hold everyone in our organization to the highest standards of sustainable practices. We have seen first-hand, with our nearly 10-year partnership with Fair Trade, how certifications can escalate our reach and take an important role in our company’s culture.”
Campos Borquez has a foundation that built and operates four community centers with development programs reaching more than 70,000 yearly users. These programs expand from recreational activities up to professional training, scholarships, crafts, arts and family therapy among others. With Fair Trade, they were able to penetrate social programs deeper within their worker’s community through an empowerment-based system that has led them to do incredible projects like building a water supply system to a town of more than 300 homes. ROC sets new horizons into this quest towards a healthy and sustainable food supply.
