Paprika is a product with great potential in this destination

Value-added Peruvian agro-exports to Spain increased by 4%

In the first two months of the year, Peru's non-traditional agricultural exports to Spain were worth around US$ 72.356 million, which is 4% more than in the same period of 2021, when this figure stood at US$ 69.680 million, reported the Exporters Association (ADEX).

Out of a total of 109 markets, Spain was the fourth most important market for Peruvian agroindustrial shipments (with value added), accounting for 4.9% of the total, and only surpassed by the US, the Netherlands and Hong Kong.

Of the items in the top ten, 4 recorded growth: palm oil, 2nd place in the ranking (+339.2%); fresh asparagus (+2.9%), processed artichokes (+31.9%) and paprika (+111.7%); 5 recorded reductions: fresh grapes, 1st place in the ranking (-25.8%); fresh mangoes (-18.4%), canned asparagus (-18.4%), avocados (-22.4%) and fresh onions (-57%) and 1, piquillo peppers, saw its shipments resumed, totaling US$ 5.474 million.

In the top 20, three items stood out for their three-digit growth: paprika with 111.7% (10th place), pallares with 127% (12th place), and asparagus with 296.9% (15th place).

Strengthening
Regarding paprika, shipments in the first two months of the year were worth US$ 1.126 million, and considering its potential in Spain, ADEX, in partnership with OCEX Madrid, will carry out the 'Trade Mission for industrial paprika, route trip Spain 2022: Murcia, Valencia and Madrid', from May 23 to 26.

The mission will be attended by between 6 and 8 Peruvian companies, which will be backed by the technical coordinator of the Capsicum Committee, both in the development of a commercial agenda and for technological activities, including a visit to the Instituto de Fomento de la RegiĆ³n de Murcia.

The plan is also to hold presentation on European regulations related to Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs).

This meeting is extremely important, because Spain is the third largest destination for Peruvian dried paprika. Spain is also among the top ten countries importing dried paprika worldwide.

It is worth noting that China, India and Peru are the leading suppliers of paprika to this European destination, so it is crucial that domestic companies strengthen their relationship with Spanish customers.
