Tanzania horticulture exports data not captured accurately

Not all horticultural exports from Tanzania are captured accurately, industry sources say. The bulk of the volumes are routed through Kenya by the firms which are subsidiaries of large companies based there.

Prof Godius Kahyarara, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Investment, Industry and Trade: “These kinds of exports are not fully captured in Tanzania data.” Due to current business arrangements, Tanzanian exporting companies are subsidiaries of large firms based in Kenya.

“Because of this, these kinds of exports are not fully captured in Tanzania data despite the huge volumes,” Kahyarara pointed out.

A year before the outbreak of Covid-19, the sub sector earned the economy $779 million in exports, for 2019. Tanzania is among the world’s top 20 producers of fresh vegetables with annual production of over 1.8 million tons of vegetables.
