Nigeria is ranked the world’s 10th largest mango producer; some 800,000 tons of the fruit are produced yearly, contributing about three per cent to the world total production, analysts said.
Of the eight varieties of mango in Nigeria, the most widely acceptable is the sweet, aromatic Ogbomosho/Enugu type. The market prefers Kent and Keitt varieties and there is an increasing demand for ripened and freshly cut mangoes.
With world demand for mangoes continuing to surge, the Chief Executive Officer, Agricultural and Rural Management Training Institute (ARMTI), Dr. Olufemi Oladunni, noted that Nigeria is well-placed to diversify its mango export markets.
According to Oladunni, the government has to work with the private sector on what needs to be done and what conditions need to be met to export in terms of quality infrastructure, and value chain and market promotion, and the key requirements for establishing a sustainable, diversified and high-value export market.
