The pomegranate campaign in Peru is approaching its final stretch, achieving a record for the Peruvian agri-export sector. According to Fresh Fruit, until May 27, Peru had shipped 48,462 tons of pomegranate for 92 million dollars, growing by 26% in volume and 14% in value over the same date of last year.
Main destinations
Peruvian pomegranate exports reached 37 destinations around the world, 4 more than in the previous season. The Netherlands was the main destination market for this fruit, with a 61% share, followed by Canada, and the United Kingdom. Up until last year, Russia was the second most important destination for the Peruvian pomegranate with a 17% share. In 2022, as a result of the war conflict in Ukraine, Russia became the sixth-biggest destination market, with only a 4% share.
Peru exported 29,797 tons of pomegranate to the Netherlands for 53 million dollars, i.e. 44% more volume and 24% more value than in the previous season. Due to the war between Russia and Ukraine, the Netherlands became the country that channeled the Peruvian pomegranate to the Eastern European countries. In this market, the price of the Peruvian pomegranate stood at 1.79 dollars per kilogram, i.e. 14% less than the previous year.
As of May, Peru exported 6,481 tons of pomegranate to Canada for $3 million, 34% more volume and 33% more value than in the previous season. This market paid one of the highest prices for the Peruvian pomegranate, after the United States (4.26 dollars per kilogram)
Peruvian pomegranate exports to the United Kingdom totaled 5,571 tons for $3 million, i.e. 36% more volume and 30% more value than in the previous season. In this market, the price of the Peruvian pomegranate stood at 1.75 dollars per kilogram, i.e. 14% less than in the previous year. This market paid one of the lowest prices for the pomegranate.
