Moldovan producers ready to offer good sweet cherry this season

The sweet cherry season in Moldova is just getting started. Despite minor spring frosts and poor pollination in some regions of the country, overall harvest forecast looks promising and sweet cherry producers are looking forward to collaborate with new customers from all over the world.

In recent years, Moldovan producers have actively invested in new resistant varieties of sweet cherries that are demanded on the market.

"The season is looking promising, and we've already begun harvesting the first varieties in our orchard. Next week we will be starting mass harvesting with the rest of the varieties. We produce several varieties of sweet cherries: Rocket, Frisco, Cordia, Ferrovia, Carina, Big Star, Regina. The fruits can be delivered in wide range of packaging, according to buyer’s request, including traditional wooden crates or carton boxes of diverse size”, told Ion Tulei, manager of FarmProd LTD, member of Fruit Producers and Exporters Association of Moldova.

Farm Prod is one of the most technologically advanced companies in the fruit industry from Moldova. The company grows cherries on a 28-hectare plot and has a cold storage facility as well as a cherry sorting and grading line. The company is GlobalG.A.P. and GRASP certified and can offer more than 300 tons of cherries this year.

In the Republic of Moldova, the cherry industry is expanding. Every year, new varieties are planted, investments are made in innovations and post-harvest technology, to ensure that the fruits are of exceptional quality and meet the highest marketing standards.

In total, 20,000 tons of sweet and sour cherries are produced annually in Moldova. The country is already among the top 20 exporters of sweet cherries. Being in a 2–5-day transportation time from Moldova to the most important EU markets and profiting of 0% import tax preferential quota for EU markets Moldova becomes an extremely attractive source of high-quality sweet cherries in the upcoming season.
