The Bangladesh Directorate of National Consumers’ Rights Protection (DNCRP) has requested the Ministry of Commerce to allow the import of onions to control the unrest in the onion market ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha festival.
AHM Safiquzzaman, director general (DG) of the consumer rights directorate, wrote a letter to the senior secretary of the Commerce Ministry, stating that onions were being sold at Tk40-45 per kg in Dhaka’s Shyambazar and at Tk 50-55 in the retail market. The prices of onions have gone up by Tk 10-15 per kg in a week, the directorate observed. The directorate accused traders of trying to destabilize the market ahead of the Eid.
That is why the directorate recommended importing onions from India in the light of the experience of previous years. For this, they have requested the ministry to allow traders the permission to import (IP) as the onion IP delivery has been kept off for over a month.
