Innovative ways for harvesting is required for red onion season

“In Egypt, there is no modern equipment for harvesting onions”

The Egyptian red onion season is in full swing and the season has been satisfying so far. Mansour Ahmed, sales manager for Egyptian exporter Pure Herbs, states that demand for the red onions is doing well in several markets: “Our red onion season has been good so far, we’re seeing solid demand from our most important markets. We export our onions to the Emirates, Kenya, Kuwait, Guinea and the United Kingdom, among other territories.”

Cultivating onions in Egypt has its challenges, as Ahmed explains that technology isn’t as advanced when it comes to harvesting. “In Egypt, there is no modern equipment for harvesting onions, but farmers have invented primitive, but effective harvesting machines with a small ‘serrated protector’  tooth to cut the onions until they are well packed in the shape that they have to be inside the sacks and have their bright red color. This method saves both time and effort!”

Ahmed has high expectations for one of their newer varieties, which has some very interesting properties: “For the remainder of the season, we expect to increase the productivity of the acre because we have added new varieties. For one, we have planted a variety called Giza Matool, which is characterized by its high yield due to the vertical height of the bulb, the small neck and stem. This variety is also characterized by its suitability for the production of onions from the bulbs. This onion is distinguished by the superior quality for storage. The onion’s color is yellow and the flesh is white. We export this onion to European and Arab countries, and on top of that it is suitable to be dried.” He concludes.
