This week, the first containers with Mexican Hass avocados arrived in Costa Rica since the restriction on Mexican avocado imports -which lasted for seven years- was lifted. The fruit was imported by the Pura Fruta company. In total, the shipment consisted of 22,040 kilos of Hass avocado.
Eduardo Ramirez, the general manager of Interfrud and vice president of the Chamber of Exporters and Importers of Perishable Products, said the imports are expected to have a positive impact on the prices paid by the final consumers.
"As the harvest in Mexico progresses and there is more avocado, the price is going to tend to fall," he said. "In fact, since the restriction was lifted, until now, the price in the wholesale market has fallen by 50%."
