Alain Alarcón, Banagrumes:

Seedless Sweeta grapes: a very promising variety

The white seedless Sweeta grapes are new on the Rungis market. Cultivated in the region of Alicante, these seedless grapes are a very recent variety that came from research conducted by Californian universities. An exclusive Banagrumes product which the wholesaler plans to offer next winter as well, since it has also been planted in the southern hemisphere.

The Sweeta grapes are large (22-24mm), crunchy and very sweet. “The first batches sold really well. We will increase our orders for next week. It is a very promising product,” explains Alain Alarcón, president of Banagrumes. “Our Asian clientele is especially fond of white seedless grapes, but the demand from our Parisian clients has also been very good from the beginning.” Seedless grapes are increasingly popular. “The younger generation only buys these varieties.”

However, these grapes require a lot of preparation work in the orchard. “The variety naturally gives very large grapes which forces producers to trim before harvest in order to be able to sell them on the market, because no one would buy grapes of 2 - 2.5 kg.” Early in the season, the grapes are still slightly green but they should get a yellow-gold coloration as the season advances.

As for prices, the Sweeta is more expensive than other seedless varieties. But according to Alain Alarcón, the price is correct for such an innovative variety. We have never seen such large grapes which are both so crunchy and sweet!”
