“Mercadona will double its investments to 280 million euro in 2023, which are destined for the construction of the future logistics block in Almeirim (center of the country) and the opening of new stores,” the company stated on Tuesday.
The chain has already announced the locations where it will open its next stores, which will be located from Marco de Canaveses (in the district of Porto), in May, to Sintra, Braga, and Figueira da Foz, among other points of the Central and Northern regions of the country.
Almeirim's logistics block, which is currently under construction, was presented to the public in February and has required an investment of 225 million euro.
The company opened its first supermarket on Portuguese soil in 2019. It was opened in the north of the country and, since then, it has expanded to the Lisbon region, adding 39 stores and three co-innovation centers.
In 2022, it recorded losses of 50 million euro, with sales that amounted to 737 million and investments of 140 million to open 10 stores and a logistics block. The Spanish distribution chain plans to have 49 stores on Portuguese soil by the end of this year.
Mercadona, which began its expansion in the north, plans to continue expanding in the center of the country and later in the south.
