Pineapple prices up slightly in Malaysia

Malaysian consumers can expect to pay slightly more for pineapples starting next month; farmers have been seeing a gradual drop in harvests over the past two years. One pineapple farmer from Simpang Renggam, in Johor, said the increase of MYR 0.20 to 30, depending on the type and grade of pineapples, would begin from July 1. He said the matter had been decided in a recent meeting with more than 60 farmers and distributors in Simpang Renggam.

According to him, Simpang Renggam district supplies about 70% of the country’s pineapples, including to Perak and Penang, as well as Singapore.

“We decided to hold a discussion because in the past two years, pineapple production has dropped by about 30% while operational costs have shot up by about 40% due to expensive fertilisers, pesticides and workers’ wages,” he said.
