In Matola municipality, located in Maputo province, a severe heatwave has devastated extensive agricultural areas, significantly affecting smallholder farmers. This climatic event is poised to aggravate the scarcity of vegetables in the primary markets of both the city and province of Maputo. Among the hardest hit crops are lettuce and cabbage in the lower elevation zones, while corn and peanuts in the higher terrains have also suffered considerable damage.
Alexandre Honwana, the president of the Union of Farmers' Associations in the Green Zones of Matola, has expressed concerns over the heat-induced produce shortfall in the 'machambas' or agricultural plots. He underscored the predicament faced by some farmers who, due to these setbacks, may struggle with replanting efforts for the forthcoming planting season.
