Rosselkhoznadzor has requested that the Kazakh Committee for State Inspection in Agriculture suspend the issuance of phytosanitary certificates for fresh melons originating from Kazakhstan starting on October 7, 2024.
This decision was made due to the repeated detection of the quarantine pest, the melon fly (Myiopardalis pardalina (Bigot)), in melons imported from Kazakhstan into Russia in both the previous and current years. The measure aims to protect Russia's phytosanitary safety.
The melon fly is a quarantine pest for member states of the Eurasian Economic Union and affects a wide range of crops from the Cucurbitaceae family, including melons, watermelons, cucumbers, pumpkins, and others.
In 2024, there was a significant increase in the flow of quarantine-regulated products imported from Kazakhstan, the majority of which were fruits and vegetables. Over 17% of the total volume of imported fruits and vegetables consisted of fresh melons, certified by Kazakhstan's Committee for state inspection in Agriculture.
