Horticulture a key driver for future agricultural development

Tanzania is prioritizing horticulture as a key driver for future agricultural development, according to Deputy Minister Stanislaus Nyong'o. He highlighted that the sector, which employs many women and youth, is crucial for job creation, boosting exports, and enhancing food security. Horticulture is growing at an annual rate of 11%, contributing significantly to the overall agricultural growth of 12%.

During the inauguration of Enza Zaden's organic seed expansion project in Arusha, it was noted that the horticulture sector's export value reached 668.7 billion Tanzanian shillings, with 175,000 tonnes of produce shipped in the current fiscal year. Tanzania has increasingly reduced its reliance on imported seeds, now producing 78.6% of its own kernels.

Ambassador Wiebe de Boer praised Enza Zaden for its collaboration with Tanzanian farmers, stating that the company employs over 3,000 people worldwide and significantly contributes to global food supply. The CEO of Enza Zaden emphasized the company's commitment to quality through adherence to international standards in seed production.
