Green onion pricing back down following summer highs

The supply of green onions is good right now. "The markets have come off of their summer highs. Green onions have moved into fall production and things have been pretty steady ever since," says Russ Widerburg of Valley Produce West.

Generally, at this time of year, there is a good supply of green onions on the front part of the winter season. "Sometimes during Christmas, the markets get a little active because of a lack of supply. However right now there are no gaps on the horizon," he says, adding that the weather's been cool in the Mexicali growing areas.

Demand to increase
So while there are no foreseeable issues with green onions in terms of supply, demand is expected to pick up just ahead of Christmas and into the new year.

The green onion markets are generally $10-$12 (which is where they have been for the last month), with iceless being a few dollars higher than that. "In the late summer and early fall, pricing was into the $20-$30," says Widerburg. "For the foreseeable future, the price should increase with Christmas and holiday demand. If the weather stays cool, supply will tighten up, which could also raise the pricing higher."
