Weekly produce ads drop 5 percent with rising prices for apples, oranges, and sweet potatoes

Stores were brimming with the freshest and finest produce to help customers create delicious and memorable meals. From vibrant fruits to crisp vegetables, retail outlets have everything that you need to make holiday celebrations extra special.

Apples, pineapples, tangerines/mandarins, and oranges were the most advertised fruits this week, with blueberries not far behind. Ads for onions and potatoes decreased this week. Sweet potatoes and celery topped the vegetable list, but squash, salad (mixed type), broccoli, carrots and were also popular items.

Total ad numbers this week were 276,107, a 5% decrease from last week's total of 291,666. The total for the same week last year was 9% higher at 303,217. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 143,443 (52% of all ads), onions and potatoes 27,510 (10%), vegetables 100,535 (36%), herbs 1,011, ornamentals 3253 (1%), and hemp 1,366. The number of ads for organic produce was 30,081, 11% of total ads.

The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus ads) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit this week included apples (Granny Smith at 16%, Honeycrisp at 10%) and oranges (Navels at 17%).

Significant decreases included tangerines/mandarins at 27% and blackberries at 13%. There were no significant increases in price for potatoes and onions this week. Significant decreases included russet potatoes (5 lb. bag) at 29%. Significant increases in price for vegetables this week included sweet potatoes at 14%. There were no significant decreases.
