Northern Peru to send Hass avocados to China in May

A new destination for northern Peru's exports. In May, the producers of Hass in northerner Peru will ship a first container of Hass avocado to the Asian giant and become a supplier of this product to China, the companies engaged in the operation said.

Tropical Farm SAC, an agricultural exporting company that is located in the city of Motupe, worked with producer Agricola BGS and exporter Trading Camet to achieve shipping the first container of Hass avocados to the Chinese market during the 2016 campaign.

"Tropical Farm SAC is a young company that, with just three years of operations, has the full capacity to supply the open markets there are to date, including the Chinese market; despite its high demands. We are all proud to be part of team that accomplished this," said Gustavo Rodriguez, Head of the company's Fresh Plant.

This shipment was also made possible thanks to the recent signing of the health protocol to export Hass avocados to China, which was achieved after more than five years of negotiations between the phytosanitary authorities of Peru and China (Senasa and AQSIQ, respectively).

Bosworth, the president of the International Avocado Society said that there had been some shipments of avocado to China in 2015 so as to get to know that market, because Chinese consumers are just getting acquainted with avocado consumption, as part of their opening to the Western world.

China is a market with 1,400 million potential consumers of Hass avocado, which, according to estimates of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri), will allow the country to increase the avocado's export volume by 30 to 50 million dollars.

The first container of Hass avocado from northern Peru, i.e. the country's second shipment of avocados to China, should be arriving to the coast of Shanghai on May 16.
