"Particularly in the fruit trade, open markets and a well-functioning agricultural trade are of crucial importance. That is why the German Fruit Trade Association (DFHV) supports the Federal Government's new foreign trade strategy," said DFHV Managing Director Dr. Andreas Brügger. Without imports, the fruit and vegetable shelves in German stores could offer only a very small assortment. "In Germany, about 80 percent of fresh fruit comes from other countries. Regarding vegetables it is about 60 percent."
The DFHV expressly supports the statement by Federal Minister of Food, Klöckner, that trade according to clear, fair rules also holds "an element of peacekeeping". Those who care for economic development, employment and food security abroad also prevent flight and migration. The import of fruit and vegetables secures jobs in exporting countries and contributes to professional development. In this way, there would be better opportunities in the producing countries to increase productivity even for smallholders, while at the same time ensuring sustainability.
