High demand for European apples in China

Eurostat data shows that in September of 2018, the EU exported 800 tons of apples to China, which is over 9 times more than in September of 2017 and about 45% of the total volume shipped in 2017. France basically accounted for this entire volume, as it is one of the few EU countries (next to Poland) able to export apples to China.

This great start of the 2018/19 season when it comes to exports to China may also be followed by a significant increase in the coming months, especially when apple stocks in China start to fall.

The demand on the Chinese market is due, in part, to a significant reduction of the country's domestic production (a consequence of frosts), and in part to the trade war with the US, which may limit the access of American apples to China.
