Guy Deryckere, Van Lier:

“Spanish vegetable season started later due to warm weather”

“We’ve had Spanish products such as bell pepper, courgette and aubergine in our range for three weeks now. Demand is fair for all products, and we’ll have to wait and see what demand will do before and during the holidays. These are fresh products, and purchases are therefore made as late as possible,” says Guy Deryckere of Van Lier. Regarding supply and prices, the season is in line with last year. “Quality of our products is good this year, despite the warm weather in Spain, although this varies per grower. We have noticed consumers prefer local and Belgian product, but when that’s not an option, they have to switch to products of other origins.”

Raspberries
Towards the holidays, soft fruit, such as strawberries and raspberries, does well every year. These products are mostly used in desserts. “We currently have raspberries from Spain, but supply is limited and demand is high. As a result of the cold weather, raspberries are in short supply this year. Prices are slightly higher than normally because of this,” Guy concludes.
